The Goldbacks are the world’s first voluntary currency to be made of a spendable, beautiful, small denomination, physical gold.

When the Utah Legal Tender Act passed in 2011, the state became the first in recent times to recognize certain forms of gold as legal tender. Gold once again established a level of official recognition as money.

Since then the technology for minting physical gold into a spendable form for small transactions has developed. The makers use cutting-edge vacuum deposition technology to layer each bill with .9999 fine gold in exacting quantities. Goldback bills carry a precise amount of pure gold between layers of polyester which makes them resilient and durable.

About the Design

The Virtue Fiducia, or Trust, is yet another first to appear on a Goldback in the Wyoming series - making her debut on the Wyoming 10 Goldback Denomination.

Fiducia is depicted with the phrase “Trust in the LORD.” She is shown as a pioneer woman on her way to settle in Star Valley, Wyoming. She follows the path worn by those who went before. She makes her best preparations, thereby protecting and following her faith as well as trusting in Deity.

The famous formation of Split Rock stands in the background. Fiducia carries a basket of birch wood on her back as kindling for the fire. The birch tree, with its year-round beauty and early foliage, symbolizes hope and new beginnings. In some local Native American cultures, the tree means truth and cleansing of the past for a new beginning. This is why birch wood has been used traditionally for making cribs for newborn babies and it is meant to invoke similar feelings in the Goldback design.

With stored potential as fuel for the fire, the birch wood is accompanied by a steel flint striker in the foreground. The striker, surrounded by Indian paintbrush and sagebrush, represents the work needed to spark the first flames, which must then be tended to realize the potential of a new beginning.

The yoked oxen represent hard work, shared burdens, consistent effort, cooperation, and equality.

The design is a nod to Wyoming’s historical milestone of voting rights for women. It encourages people to follow the example of Fiducia. Trust in what is right and in the example, and counsel, of those who have gone before. This trust will help us arrive at the best place and realize our full potential. This is essential for the protection and cultivation of Liberty.
